Running head: RESEARCH PROPOSAL 0 Research Proposal Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Research Proposal I wish to explore the workforce strategies on tattoos. And my research topic would be how the tattooed employees observed by employers, coworkers, and clients in various professions, and the factors affecting the managers’ attitudes toward worker tattoos? The research questions I will use are such as, does the what effect or influence does the location or the issue of the tattoo have in the manager’s opinion of the tattooed individual? How difficult is it to secure a job with a tattoo? How are the tattooed workers paid in their respective places (comparing the tattooed and those without tattoos)? Since tattoos have become a common thing in society with diverse perceptions, I would also examine how the workplaces have or not changed places to accommodate the tattooed. The topic suits into two different conversations, comprising academic discussions about the origin of tattoos and the professional side about work. Nowadays, tattoos are more conventional, unlike in the past, when they did not have a role to play in culture. According to research done a few years ago, for 500 people aged over 18 and below 50, 24% have tattoos (Tews & Stafford, 2019). It implies that almost a quarter of the population is tattooed, and the number continues to increase. With the increase of tattoos, the perceptions about them may change. For instance, some may decide to have them inked. I believe that I have enough knowledge of tattooing’s fundamental issues in the workplace, like the rules of displaying tattoos and the varying enforcement of tattoos. I will refer to different relevant articles that discuss the tattoo policies and their impact. Although I have dependable sources about the origin of tattoos in America and even in the region, I will link the sources with the current tattoo culture in the United States of America. I believe I will find how the managers view tattoos and the consequential effect in their careers. Reference Tews, M. J., & Stafford, K. (2019). The Relationship Between Tattoos and Employee Workplace Deviance. Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, 43(7), 1025-1043.

Luis, this is a fascinating topic, and I believe it would be a serious and worthy doctoral dissertation and I hope you give yourself the opportunity to do it someday (when you do please let me be on your dissertation committee). But for now, let’s see if we can get this situated into a viable action research project that is focused on your leadership practice and your context. I remember your discussion post and how you talked about working policy issues related to tattoos. What are your direct experiences working with people – are there inherent biases in the system for/against people with tattoos? Do you see this in the workplace, especially in your own workplace? What are the impacts on morale, diversity, employment opportunity, etc. How can you make a positive influence on the situation? The questions you listed as research questions indicate you’ve witnessed something important here. Think about a “how can I” question that you could use as a research question to drive your research. Work on your own practice in your own environment. Action research is not designed to come up with solutions at the macro level, but to come up with solutions to improve practice at the individual level that can be shared. Again, a profoundly interesting overall topic, but we need to get it within the parameters for action research.
