NRS 440VN Week 3 DQ 2
Discuss the difference between a DNP and a PhD in nursing. Discuss which of these you would choose to pursue if you decide to continue your education to the doctoral level and explain why.
There is a difference between a DNP and a PhD in nursing, but they are both advanced degrees. The difference lies in the purpose of each degree. A DNP is designed to prepare nurses who want to work in leadership roles or as professors. A PhD is designed to prepare nurses who want to focus on research and teaching.
Both degrees require that students complete all of their coursework, but the DNP does not require students to do research or write a dissertation. A PhD does require students to do both research and write a dissertation, so it’s important to decide which path you’re most interested in pursuing.
If I were planning on continuing my education beyond an undergraduate degree, I would choose to pursue the PhD because it would allow me to be able to teach at the highest level possible while still being able to pursue my own research project.
