  • Writing: examine the argument genre by deconstructing Ravitch (2010).

Diane Ravitch was born in 1938. She is a historian of education and education policy analyst. Ravitch is a professor at the NYU Steinhardt School of Education.

Ravitch, D. (2010). The Death and Life of the Great American School System.  How testing and Choice are Undermining Education. New York: Basic Books.

In chapter 6, “NCLB: Measure and Punish,” Ravitch presents a brief overview of the No Child Left Behind Policy, particularly focusing on its accountability features. She argues that although she initially agreed with the policy, she is now against it because the policy failed. She explains why this policy failed.

In addition to paying attention to the content that Ravitch is presenting, take a look at how she structures her argument, and how she introduces evidence.
