The primary role of nurses is to promote health and well-being among patients. This is in line with the quality vision of health systems to ensure services rendered are safe, reliable, and timely and patient-centered (Ross et al., 2017). There are professional and institutional goals and set standards that ensure such outcomes are achievable. The most promising approach is on the use of evidence-based practice since it not only results in patient and nurse satisfaction but also saves on health care costs and the use of resources. Nurses play a vital role in treatment and care. For example, while working as a psychiatric nurse, one has the mandate to develop treatment plans or use therapeutic skills to create multiple options for mental health disorders depending on the patient’s case. Nurses have the capacity to offer primary care services, which may include diagnosis and administration of therapy (Ross et al., 2017). Nurses need to play an active role in developing and promoting evidence-based practices and propositions to improve health outcomes and work satisfaction. A critical factor to support the nurse working environment is to focus on the organizational culture of the clinical setting.
Being a multidimensional concept, organizational culture could include norms, beliefs, assumptions, vision, values, and philosophies that hold an institution together (Rovithis et al., 2016). The concept can be observed in the way individuals interact, how they treat clients, and the image portrayed by leaders. Organizational culture may also be influenced by personal attributes, which, for example, may impact the ability of nurses to practice professionally, causing adverse patient outcomes—organizational culture impact staff productivity and how they approach their work and interact with one another (Hahtela, 2015). Corporate culture determines performance and quality outcomes such as job satisfaction, staff turnover rate, patient and personnel safety, financial performance, and supportive management (Rovithis et al., 2016). Nurses play a vital role in organizational culture as they experience first-hand contact with patients and portray the image of the organization; hence they need to be active in adapting to changing healthcare environmental change.
The cultural organization of the psychiatric clinic I had experience with seems to be more advanced. It promotes constructive culture styles only for a few elderly nurses that still play a defensive culture. Still, it is only because they do not understand new interventions, but with education, they are receptive to new ideas. The institution recognizes the advantages that come with adopting evidence-based interventions. The CNO is receptive to new ideas and practices. Still, she is reluctant to support the interventions unless she receives convincing evidence that the concept or practice is functional, well-researched, and does not cause harm to the patient and tarnish the institution’s image, of which is a rational approach. Some leaders in the institution were defensive and preferred to work only with the strategies that they understand and have been using for years.
The senior leadership is also hard to convince, but they are supportive of changes that assure to be promising in the provision of care and with quality outcomes. A good example is on the way they were fast to experiment on the use of wellness follow-up forms in minimizing readmission rates among psychotic patients, which proved to be a viable concept. The leadership later put up a budget for nurse and staff educational programs for organizational changes towards quality based interventions. The clinic has adopted a constructive culture to be on par with the current trends in healthcare. While the institution is yet to be where it aims, some of the strategies that I may use to move the organization to higher heights include convincing the management to facilitate a supportive environment in which staff nurse can impact their construction practices to improve care. The leaders can tap on the nurses’ knowledge of the system, increase their visibility and participation in leadership input and decision making (Laschinger & Fida, 2015). By championing for a quality improvement intervention such as by the use of wellness follow-up forms to enhance patient adherence and reduction in readmission rates can be the first step towards convincing the leadership.

Determining resources to prevent error and improve patient safety can often be a battle, and this scenario illustrates how one organization makes strides to make sure resources are available in the interest of patient safety. Define the organizational culture of your health care organization, or one with which you are familiar, and identify the leadership style of the CEO and CNO in your organization. Explain how your senior leadership supports—or does not support—changes that require financing/budget to support patient safety. Describe the strategies you might be able to implement to move your health care organization to a high-performing organization.
