My capstone project is blood cultures contamination, the facility where I am conducting my evidence-based practice the department head receives a report monthly on contaminated blood cultures. The report is broken down into categories such as patients affected, staff member involved in collecting the specimen and the percentage rate of contamination with a percentage goal in mind.
What my preceptor and I have been discussing in our meetings is a weekly report would be more productive in stopping the frequent offenders. This will give us much more information to see if the re-educating and re-directing since I have been involved in the project has helped. Infection control group also provides a graph to show our productivity that is placed in the break room showing us how great or poorly we are doing in stopping blood culture contamination. With the help of the infection control group, we would be able to keep track of our culture contamination weekly with a graph. Graphs and charts condense large amounts of information into easy-to-understand formats that clearly and effectively communicate important points (CDC, 2018).
